Do you know where your eggs come from?
Caged birds or Free Range Eggs
Free range eggs are not something usually found in your grocery store! Most grocery store eggs come from hens, 5 or 6 to a cage, with no freedom, thousands of birds in the same building. Grocery store "free range" eggs typically come from hens crowded together in pens, fed commercial feed, without access to fresh pasture. My hens run around grass pastures all day and then are safely put up loose in the barn at night. They eat fresh grass, other plants, all the bugs they can catch, and some scratch grains and chicken mash. In the winter, they still get to run loose during the day but obviously there is no green grass. They still pick around outside for goodies and also have hay to eat. They are not fed any antibiotics. They produce fewer eggs this way but the eggs are far superior to grocery store eggs. Brown eggs with bright orange yolks, rich flavor, and loaded with Omega-3 fatty acids. They are also a good source of lutein and zeaxanthin.
Real eggs are a seasonal product. In the spring, with lots of fresh new grass and more sunlight, egg production goes up. It tapers down in the fall and by winter egg production is very limited. If I increased hen numbers in the winter, to increase egg production, the egg quality would suffer and I won't do that.
Eggs are available, self serve, on the farm, in a cooler at the end of the drive. $2 a dozen, self serve. Come early they sell out fast!!
